Solar panel installation in Cache County, Utah

Green Box Solar is headquartered in Logan, so Cache County is home. Here's what actually changes from one part of the valley to the next when you go solar.

We design, install, and service home and business solar, battery backup, off-grid systems, and EV chargers across Cache County.

Your electric utility shapes how solar pays off

Logan and Hyrum both run their own electric utilities. Both cities are members of Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems, an association of public power utilities owned and operated by the communities they serve. If your home or business is on one of these city-owned systems, your solar terms come from that city's utility rather than from Rocky Mountain Power's Schedule 137.

Logan City Light & Power replaced net metering with a Distributed Generation policy in 2018. Excess solar energy is bought back at a rate the city updates every July, and residential systems are capped at 10 kW (500 kW for commercial and industrial customers).

For Rocky Mountain Power customers in Utah, solar falls under Schedule 137, Net Billing Service. Energy your system sends to the grid earns an export credit rate, with separate summer (June through September) and winter (October through May) rates reviewed and approved by the Utah Public Service Commission. The most recent revision took effect March 1, 2026.

Because the rules differ by utility, we confirm which utility serves your address, and its current solar terms, before we put a number on your savings.

Permits and approvals

Inside Logan, a solar installation needs two approvals: a Logan City building permit and a design application reviewed by Logan City Light & Power. The city also requires the solar provider to be NABCEP certified and to complete Logan's installer orientation, and asks customers to complete an orientation video before the design review.

Green Box Solar is fully licensed and insured for electrical and solar work in both Utah and Idaho. Wherever you are in Cache County, we handle the permits and utility paperwork for you with the city or county office that has jurisdiction over your property.

The federal solar tax credit: what changed

The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit covered 30% of the cost of home solar installed from 2022 through December 31, 2025. The IRS states the credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

For a home system bought with cash or financing today, your savings come from the electricity you no longer buy and from your utility's credit for the energy you send back to the grid. Your quote shows both, using your utility's current terms.

Local facts last verified October 5, 2026. Utility rates and programs change, so we confirm your utility's current terms before every quote.
